In a tightly contested third-round clash at the Shanghai Masters, Britain's Dan Evans faced off against the world number two, Carlos Alcaraz, ultimately succumbing to a defeat.
Evans managed to secure a break in each set, but the Spaniard prevailed with a score of 7-6 (7-1) and 6-4 after an intense battle that spanned nearly two and a half hours on the court.
In a particularly grueling moment, Evans valiantly saved six break points, following a total of 13 in the first set, during a marathon fifth game that stretched for nearly 20 minutes. Despite his efforts, he lost the opening set in a tie-break.
The second set saw Evans broken while serving to stay in the match.
Reflecting on the contest, Alcaraz commented, "It was a really tough match. It was one of the toughest matches I have played outside of the Grand Slams. Every time I play Daniel, it is a tricky match, and I have to play my best to beat him. Both of us displayed a high level of tennis, and I am really happy to come out on top."
Alcaraz is now set to face Grigor Dimitrov in the last 16, who secured his victory against Karen Khachanov with a score of 7-6 (8-6) and 6-4.
Meanwhile, at the Korea Open in Seoul, British player Katie Boulter experienced a setback in the first round, as she was defeated 6-4 and 6-4 by Kaja Juvan from Slovenia.
