Carlos Alcaraz triumphs in Indian Wells opener despite initial setback

Posted : 09 March 2024

World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz faced a challenging start in his Indian Wells Masters title defense, losing the opening set against Matteo Arnaldi but ultimately securing victory with a 6-7 (5/7), 6-0, 6-1 scoreline.

The match served as a crucial fitness test for Alcaraz, who had suffered an ankle injury in Rio two weeks ago. Despite the initial setback, Alcaraz demonstrated resilience, reducing his unforced errors and feeling pleasantly surprised by the improved condition of his ankle. The reigning Wimbledon champion is set to face Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the next round.

Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek advanced to the third round with commanding performances. Sinner, the Australian Open champion, defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-3, 6-0, maintaining his undefeated record this season.

Swiatek, the women's world No. 1 and defending Indian Wells champion, secured a straightforward victory over Danielle Collins with a 6-3, 6-0 scoreline. On the other hand, former No. 1 Andy Murray faced disappointment with a 7-6 (7/3), 6-1 loss to fifth seed Andrey Rublev, exiting the tournament where he lost the 2009 final.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova cruised into the next round by defeating Bernarda Pera 6-0, 6-2 in just 64 minutes. However, Elena Rybakina's WTA title defense came to an abrupt end as she withdrew from her scheduled opener due to a gastrointestinal issue, marking a disappointing exit from the competition.
