Carlos Alcaraz expressed his mixed emotions on Wednesday as he prepares to face his idol, Rafael Nadal, for the final time in their storied rivalry. Nadal, a legendary figure in tennis with 22 Grand Slam titles to his name, recently announced that he will retire after the upcoming Davis Cup Finals in Malaga next month. Their encounter is set for Thursday at the "Six Kings Slam" exhibition event in Riyadh, where Alcaraz aims to secure a spot in the final.
Reflecting on his admiration for Nadal, Alcaraz stated, "Since I started to play tennis, I've been watching his matches. I look up to him, and I grew up watching him. He was my idol, and he is still my idol." The reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion highlighted the significant impact Nadal has had on his career, admitting, "Knowing he is going to retire is pretty tough for everyone, including me." Alcaraz aims to cherish the opportunity to share the court with Nadal one last time, acknowledging the emotional weight of the moment.
In their previous encounters on the ATP Tour, Nadal holds a 2-1 advantage over Alcaraz. The two Spanish stars recently teamed up for doubles at the Paris Olympics and are expected to collaborate again at the Davis Cup Finals. Nadal also played his last singles match at the Olympics, where he faced off against his longtime rival Novak Djokovic on the iconic Roland Garros courts, where he has claimed 14 French Open titles.
The other semifinal match in Riyadh will feature Djokovic competing against Jannik Sinner, the current World No. 1. Sinner, who triumphed over Daniil Medvedev with a score of 6-0, 6-3 on Wednesday, acknowledged that his upcoming match against Djokovic would be a different challenge. "We know each other quite well and we know what to expect from each other," Sinner said, expressing his determination to play his best tennis as he heads into the semifinal clash.
