Carlos Alcaraz Dominates in Paris Masters Opener, Advances to Round of 16

Posted : 30 October 2024

Carlos Alcaraz kicked off his Paris Masters journey on Tuesday with a decisive 7-5, 6-1 victory over Chile’s Nicolas Jarry. Receiving a bye in the first round, Alcaraz initially took control with a 3-0 lead, though Jarry mounted a brief comeback, making the Spaniard work to secure the first set at 7-5. In the second set, Alcaraz's performance was dominant, allowing Jarry only one game as he swiftly wrapped up the match.

Reflecting on his win, Alcaraz expressed his excitement about advancing in Paris, noting that it had been two years since his last match win at this tournament. “Every time that I keep going is a gift for me," said the 21-year-old, who admitted that gaining confidence in the opening set was crucial for him to build momentum in the second. Adjusting to the court's pace, he added, has been essential to his game.

Alcaraz is a strong contender for his first Paris Masters title on the hard court at Bercy Arena, particularly following the withdrawal of world number one Jannik Sinner due to an intestinal virus. Next, Alcaraz will face either Frenchman Ugo Humbert or American Marcos Giron in the round of 16, as he continues his campaign as the tournament favourite.

Elsewhere, Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo upset sixth-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev with a hard-fought 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (7/5) win, and Alex Michelsen of the United States delivered a surprising defeat to 12th seed Hubert Hurkacz, winning 6-1, 6-3 in just over 50 minutes. Meanwhile, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alex de Minaur, and Holger Rune all advanced, keeping their Turin ATP Finals hopes alive.
