Caroline Wozniacki expressed feeling "a bit rusty" after her comeback victory in the first round of the Canadian Open, marking her return to tennis after retiring in 2020.
The 33-year-old former world number one, who is now a mother of two, triumphed over Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell with a score of 6-2 6-2 in Montreal.
Wozniacki, visibly pleased with her performance, stated, "It feels great." Her next challenge will be facing Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the second round after Vondrousova's 6-4 6-2 win against Mayar Sherif.
Reflecting on her return to the sport, Wozniacki expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to play in Montreal, a place she enjoys competing in.
Having voiced her intention to play in this year's US Open during an interview with Vogue in June, Wozniacki received a wildcard entry for the event, commencing on August 28th.
Wozniacki's victory marked her first competitive match since the Australian Open over three years ago. She became a mother to daughter Olivia in June 2021 and son James in October 2022.
Describing her win as a mother as "pretty crazy," Wozniacki mentioned that her children would be napping, allowing her some time to relax. She expressed joy about having the afternoon to spend with them.
Although Wozniacki initially dropped the opening game, she managed to rally and secure the first set by winning the final four games. She clinched the match in the second set by breaking Birrell with a backhand winner.
Wozniacki's upcoming opponent, Marketa Vondrousova, returned to the court for the first time since her Wimbledon victory. Vondrousova acknowledged the higher expectations after her Grand Slam success but emphasized the importance of focusing on her growth, managing pressure, and working through matches.
