Posted : 09 August 2023
Andy Murray has advanced to the second round of the Canadian Open in Toronto with a convincing straight-set victory over Lorenzo Sonego in challenging windy conditions. The 36-year-old defeated the Italian opponent with a score of 7-6 (7-3) 6-0 during the ATP Masters 1,000 event. Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, had previously claimed victory in this tournament in 2009, 2010, and 2015.
Meanwhile, British number one Cameron Norrie faced a defeat, losing 7-5 6-4 to Australia's Alex de Minaur. Norrie, ranked 13th in the world, had a set point on his serve against De Minaur, but the adverse windy weather affected his performance, extending his streak of poor form.
On the other hand, compatriot Dan Evans was also unable to secure a win, falling to a loss against Canadian wildcard Gabriel Diallo. Evans, ranked 21st in the world and fresh from winning his first ATP 500 title at the Citi Open in Washington DC, was defeated with a score of 7-6 (7-4) 7-5.
Reflecting on his victory, Murray commented, "I managed to sneak through the tie-break and after that he was obviously a bit disappointed, and I relaxed a little bit." Despite the passage of time since his previous successes in the tournament, Murray expressed fond memories of playing in Toronto and aimed to build momentum in the tournament.
