Canada successfully launched its Davis Cup title defense, defeating Italy 3-0 in the group stage of the finals. In the Unipol Arena in Bologna, Alexis Galarneau set the tone with a 7-6 (8), 6-4 victory over Lorenzo Sonego, followed by Gabriel Diallo's straight-set win of 7-5, 6-4 against Lorenzo Musetti, securing the victory for the Canadian team. Galarneau later teamed up with Vasek Pospisil to clinch the doubles match as well.
Canada, the reigning Davis Cup champions, secured their place in the finals alongside Australia. Last year, they triumphed over Australia to claim their first-ever title. The finals are organized into four groups of four teams, with the top two from each group advancing to the Final 8, scheduled for November in Malaga, Spain.
In another group, Australia faced a 2-1 loss to Britain in Manchester, England. The Australians experienced defeats in both singles matches, with Jack Draper defeating Thanasi Kokkinakis and Dan Evans overcoming Alex de Minaur in three sets. However, Australia found consolation in the doubles match, where Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell secured a victory.
Meanwhile, the United States commenced their campaign in Split against the host nation, Croatia. Mackenzie McDonald delivered a strong performance with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Dino Prizmic. However, the unexpected occurred as 11th-ranked Frances Tiafoe suffered a surprising loss to No. 77 Borna Gojo in a closely contested match of 6-4, 7-6 (6). The deciding doubles match saw Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram triumphing over Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic with a score of 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-2, securing a 2-1 victory for the U.S.
In another encounter, the Czech Republic emerged victorious with a 3-0 win against Spain, who was without Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz. The matches took place in the Spanish city of Valencia.
