Camila Osorio advanced to the second round of the GDL Open Akron after defeating American Hailey Baptiste in just over an hour, 6-3, 6-2. Osorio admitted to not having the best start but was pleased with her ability to stay calm and find her rhythm as the match progressed. Sporting a star on her cheek as a personal touch, she acknowledged winning despite not feeling at her best.
Osorio had a shaky beginning, making a few errors due to nerves against Baptiste, whom she had previously beaten at the same venue in the Zapopan Open 2022. However, Baptiste struggled with her first serve, and Osorio took advantage, dropping only one point from 25 on her first serve in the first set. A couple of double faults from Baptiste in the eighth game gave Osorio the break she needed to serve out the set.
In the second set, Baptiste lost her serve in the opening game, allowing Osorio to gain momentum. Another break in the third game secured Osorio a commanding lead, and after 1:06 hours, she booked her spot in the second round of the tournament.
In doubles action, Poland’s Katarzyna Piter and Hungary’s Fanny Stollar advanced after a tight 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 victory over Italy’s Angelica Moratelli and American Sabrina Santamaria. Meanwhile, Russian Valeria Savinykh and Canadian Marina Stakusic also moved to the next phase with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 win against Americans Anna Rogers and Alana Smith.
