Cameron Norrie suffered a first-round exit at the Mexican Open in Acapulco, losing to 19-year-old American qualifier Learner Tien. The British player, currently ranked 74th in the world, was defeated 7-6 (7-5) 6-3, marking an early setback in his campaign. This loss came despite Norrie having previously beaten Tien in their only prior meeting earlier this year in Hong Kong.
The match saw Tien take an early 4-1 lead in the opening set before Norrie fought back to serve for the set at 5-4. However, Tien broke his serve and secured the tie-break, gaining momentum to dominate the second set. With this victory, the young American demonstrated his growing potential on the ATP Tour, taking down an experienced opponent.
Meanwhile, second seed Casper Ruud progressed to the second round with a 6-4 6-3 win over France’s Arthur Rinderknech. American players Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton, seeded third and fifth respectively, also advanced with straight-set victories, ensuring a strong presence for the United States in the tournament’s next stage.
