Britain's Cameron Norrie has secured his place in his first ATP final since February 2023 after a commanding 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Corentin Moutet at the Moselle Open in Metz. The win marked a strong conclusion to a season that had been marred by injury and inconsistency, as Norrie made his return following a two-month absence due to a forearm issue. Despite a tough mid-year slump, the 29-year-old has found his form just in time to end the season on a high note.
Norrie's journey to the final has been one of resilience. He started the season well with a run to the Australian Open round of 16 and a semi-final appearance at the Rio Open, but his momentum faltered due to both fitness struggles and form issues. Now ranked 57th in the world, Norrie has fought hard to get back into the top 50, which he is set to re-enter next week. Reflecting on his season, Norrie acknowledged the difficulty of the year but expressed satisfaction in reaching the final after such adversity.
Against Moutet, Norrie showed impressive focus, serving strongly and capitalizing on nearly all his break-point opportunities, converting four out of five. This came after a close and dramatic quarter-final where he had to recover from a second-set tie-break loss to Zizou Bergs. In contrast, he remained composed in the tie-break against Moutet, rallying from 5-2 down to seal the win and clinch the match in straight sets. His celebration after the victory, complete with a shout of joy to his team, demonstrated the emotion and relief he felt.
Norrie’s final opponent will either be France's Benjamin Bonzi or Alex Michelsen of the United States. This final will be the 15th of Norrie’s career, and he will be looking to claim his first title since his win over Carlos Alcaraz in Rio earlier this year. Despite the challenges he's faced this season, Norrie is optimistic and determined, eager to finish the year by competing for every point in his bid for the title.
