At the Madrid Open, British number one Cameron Norrie defeated Yosuke Watanuki of Japan in straight sets to advance to the round of 32.
The 27-year-old came back to win the first set 6-4 7-6 (7-5) on clay after falling behind by a break.
Despite being rated 104 places lower than Norrie, Watanuki nearly forced the British player into a decisive set in Spain.
Earlier on Saturday, Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain defeated fellow Brit Dan Evans in straight sets.
The world number 42 defeated the British number two, 6-3, 6-2, and will now play Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin in the next round.
Evans had intended to capitalize on some of the momentum created at the Barcelona Open, when he advanced to the semifinals before losing to top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz, 19, in straight sets.
In the crucial matchup in the lead-up to the French Open, which begins on May 28, Norrie defeated Watanuki by winning five straight games to take the first set before winning a second-set tie-break.
The 11th seed, who was eliminated in the last 16 in Barcelona earlier this month, will try to get his preparation back on track when he takes on China's Zhizhen Zhang in the following round.
