British Players Norrie, Evans face first-round defeats at China Open

Posted : 29 September 2023
British tennis players Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans faced tough defeats in the first round of the China Open men's singles. Norrie, Britain's top-ranked player, lost to Russia's fifth seed Andrey Rublev in a closely contested match that ended 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Evans, aged 33, was defeated by Italian sixth seed Jannik Sinner, with the final score being 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3.

These losses mark the end of British representation in the men's draw of the tournament, following Andy Murray's earlier exit in the first round at the hands of Australian Alex de Minaur.

Evans, after losing the first set, managed to level the match with a tiebreak but was ultimately broken by Sinner at 4-3 in the third set, leading to Sinner's victory.

Norrie had a strong start, taking the first set, but faced a formidable challenge from the Russian in the second set, resulting in a win for Rublev.

In other matches at the China Open, Russia's world number three Daniil Medvedev secured a victory over USA's Tommy Paul and will face Alex de Minaur next. Holger Rune of Denmark also progressed, setting up a match against Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov in the second round.

Meanwhile, Greece's world number six Stefanos Tsitsipas suffered a defeat at the hands of Chile's Nicolas Jarry with a score of 6-4, 6-4. Spanish Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz was scheduled to play against Germany's qualifier Yannick Hanfmann later in the day.

In the quarter-finals of the Pan Pacific Open in Japan, Iga Swiatek, a four-time grand slam winner, was beaten by eighth seed Veronika Kudermetova, while American Jessica Pegula, ranked fourth in the world, secured a victory against Russia's Daria Kasatkina with a score of 6-1, 6-0.

At the Ningbo Open, Tunisia's Ons Jabeur advanced to the final by defeating Argentine Nadia Podoroska with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. She is set to face Russia's Diana Shnaider in the upcoming final on Saturday.
