Boulter's Valient Effort Falls Short as Great Britain Miss Out on United Cup Semi-Finals

Posted : 02 January 2025

Katie Boulter came close to securing a remarkable win over Iga Swiatek, but ultimately fell short, as Great Britain's hopes of advancing to the United Cup semi-finals were dashed by Poland. Boulter needed to win the match to force a deciding doubles, but Swiatek triumphed 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 6-4 in a gripping contest that lasted nearly three hours.

Both players showed mutual respect, exchanging a warm embrace after the match. Swiatek acknowledged the intensity of the match, noting the numerous momentum shifts, and was relieved not to have to play the doubles.

Boulter's performance was impressive, especially considering the high level of competition. She had been a standout player for Britain during the tournament, with key victories over Argentina's Nadia Podoroska and Australia's Olivia Gadecki in the group stage.

Against Swiatek, Boulter showed resilience after a shaky start, initially trailing 4-1 in the first set, but fought back to win the set. She continued to challenge Swiatek with powerful groundstrokes, playing some of the best tennis of her career to take the lead. However, Swiatek's experience and adjustments allowed her to equalize and eventually win in the final set.

In the earlier match, Billy Harris, Britain's best hope after Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie were unavailable, also fought hard but lost 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 to Hubert Hurkacz. Harris, who has made significant improvements in his career, put up a strong fight but was unable to break Hurkacz's serve at crucial moments.

Despite his strong serving, the higher-ranked Hurkacz's experience proved decisive, further complicating Britain's chances.

With the loss, Poland advanced to the United Cup semi-finals, where they will face Kazakhstan. The British team, despite strong individual performances, fell short in their bid to reach the next stage, marking another tough defeat for them in this competition.
