Billie Jean King Cup 2023 Results: Caroline Garcia Defeats Britain's Harriet Dart
Posted : 19 April 2023
As a result of Harriet Dart's defeat against France's Caroline Garcia, the world's fifth-ranked player, in their best-of-five qualifying match, Great Britain was unable to go to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
In the absence of Emma Raducanu, Dart, the top-ranked player from Britain, was defeated by Garcia 6-1 6-7 (10-12) 6-1.
The 2022 US Open semifinal victory gave France a 3-0 advantage.
Instead of competing in the 12-team Finals, Britain must participate in a play-off to earn a spot in the 2024 qualifications.
If Anne Keothavong's team loses the match in November, they will be dropped to the Group I stage of the competition, which is contested locally in the European/African zone and is the level below the top international tier.
Due to their previous accomplishments and superior ranks, the French team has always been a tough opponent for Britain.
When they dropped two close singles matches in Coventry on Friday that had five tie breaks and razor-thin margins—Dart losing to Alize Cornet after teammate Katie Boulter was defeated by Garcia—the challenge was made much more difficult.
British captain Keothavong described the defeats as "terrible," and she was given the duty of gathering her teammates the next day.
About 18 hours after being humiliated by Cornet, Dart, 26, returned to the court knowing that she needed to win to keep Britain's slender chances alive.
In a lopsided first set ended in Garcia's favor after only 28 minutes, those possibilities were remote.
The British number three broke back in the following game after dropping her serve for a 2-0 deficit, but Garcia used her strong and ruthless style to dismantle Dart's service game.
