Benedikt Duda advances to Men's Singles quarterfinals
Posted : 01 July 2023
Benedikt Duda produced a remarkable comeback to secure a spot in the Men's Singles quarterfinals at WTT Contender Zagreb 2023. Ranked 32nd in the world, the German faced a tough challenge from Noshad Alamiyan but eventually prevailed in a thrilling five-game encounter (6-11, 13-15, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6) in the battle of the left-handers.
The match was anticipated to be an exciting affair, as Duda and Alamiyan had previously split their two encounters. However, their last meeting had taken place five years ago, adding to the intrigue.
Alamiyan started strongly, dominating with a 72% success rate on his serves in the first two games, creating a significant hurdle for Duda to overcome.
The turning point came as Duda gradually deciphered Alamiyan's serve, displaying exceptional anticipation and precision. By the end of the match, the German had reduced Alamiyan's win rate to 50% while impressively achieving a 63% success rate on his own serves.
In the decisive fifth game, Duda's momentum carried him to a comfortable victory, overpowering his Iranian opponent in the rallies.
Duda's reward for his stunning comeback is a quarterfinal clash against top seed Fan Zhendong, who has been in exceptional form, yet to drop a single game in the Men's Singles competition at WTT Contender Zagreb.
Meanwhile, the day's matches in the Women's Doubles category also proved to be nail-biters, with three out of the four quarterfinals extending to a full five-game contest. The tightest encounter featured Qian Tianyi and Liu Weishan against He Zhuojia and Kuai Man.
Qian and Liu found themselves on the brink of elimination but remained composed to secure a hard-fought victory (11-6, 8-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-7).
Qian and Liu initially struggled to adapt to the challenging and unorthodox style of play from their opponents, He and Kuai. However, they made crucial adjustments and managed to find their rhythm, ultimately seizing control of the match.
Qian and Liu will now face Suthasini Sawettabut and Orawan Paranang in the semifinals, as they continue their quest for success in Zagreb.
