Australian Open 2024: Extended schedule aims to tackle late finishes and enhance fan experience

Posted : 03 October 2023
The Australian Open, set to be the first Grand Slam of the year in 2024, is undergoing a significant change in its schedule.

Tournament organizers have made the decision to extend the event from its traditional 14 days to 15 days, marking the first time in the tournament's history that it will span a fortnight and a day.

This adjustment comes as a response to the ongoing issue of late finishes, a problem exacerbated by the longer matches seen in the five-set format over time.

Starting from the next edition, the Australian Open will kick off on a Sunday instead of its customary Monday start. This extra day has been added to address the late-night matches and to provide a more equitable schedule for players and fans.

Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley explained that this change is a direct response to feedback from both players and spectators. The first round will now span three days instead of two, offering fans an additional day of top-tier tennis, entertainment, culinary delights, and family-oriented activities.

In light of the extended schedule, the total number of sessions will increase from 47 to 52 across the tournament's three main arenas. Night sessions will maintain their current format, featuring at least two matches.

However, during the day sessions at the Rod Laver Arena and the Margaret Court Arena, the new schedule will include a minimum of two matches, as opposed to the previous requirement of at least three matches.

This move aims to streamline the Australian Open, making it more enjoyable for all involved while addressing the challenges of late finishes. The tournament continues to evolve, with organizers committed to providing a fresh and exciting experience for fans.
