ATP Sunday showcases intense rivalries and player preparations ahead of Tokyo Tennis Championships

Posted : 16 October 2023
ATP Sunday at the Ariake Colosseum took place under a closed roof due to heavy rain. The event provided the center court audience with a chance to observe main draw players preparing for upcoming important matches. The first match featured Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur, two closely matched players in both age and ranking. Zverev, ranked 10th at 26 years old, and de Minaur, ranked 11th at 24 years old, have faced each other seven times in their careers.

De Minaur secured a victory against Zverev in one of those encounters, benefiting from a home ground advantage during the ATP Cup in Australia. Zverev is gearing up to face Jordan Thompson in the opening round of the Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships, while de Minaur is set to take on a qualifier.

Zverev expressed his readiness for the tournament, having recovered from an ankle injury and showing steady improvement since Roland Garros, aiming to maintain his 7th place position in the rankings. De Minaur, on the other hand, has a lot at stake in Tokyo, with a strong performance potentially boosting his 12th place position in the rankings ahead of the Master 1000 in Bercy.

The playing styles of Zverev and de Minaur were notably distinct, with de Minaur adopting an aggressive stance by standing inside the baseline, taking on Zverev's powerful serves early, and frequently approaching the net. In contrast, Zverev maintained a lower position on the baseline and capitalized on his formidable serving abilities.

Following this match, Cameron Norrie and Casper Ruud took the court. Despite facing each other only three times professionally, Ruud had emerged victorious in all three encounters. Ruud's precision and emotionless style of play were evident during the match. He is set to face Watanuki in the first round and is determined to progress beyond the initial stage. Notably, Ruud has accumulated 10 titles, double the number of titles won by Norrie.
