Posted : 26 July 2023
In a triumphant return to the Center Court at Rothenbaum, local hero Alexander Zverev (26) secured a swift victory in the first round of the Hamburg European Open, defeating Alex Molcan from Slovakia 6-1, 6-0 in just 3 minutes.
Zverev's opponent in the next round will be Maximilian Marterer (28) from Nuremberg, who emerged victorious in a German duel against Rudi Molleker (22) from Berlin, with a score of 7:6 (7:2), 6:2.
Reflecting on his performance, Zverev mentioned that unlike his previous week's match in Bastad, Sweden, he found this encounter smoother, attributing it to being in Hamburg and feeling more at home. The fans in the stands showed their enthusiasm and support for the local star.
Zverev, who grew up in the Alster Valley, expressed his comfort at playing at home, noting that athletes tend to feel more at ease in familiar surroundings. His last appearance at Rothenbaum was in 2019, with subsequent disruptions delaying his return.
Now, he aims to become the next German champion at this esteemed tournament, following in the footsteps of Michael Stich, who won it 30 years ago.
In the upcoming match on Wednesday, Zverev will face Marterer, who arrives with renewed confidence after winning a Challenger tournament in Amersfoort.
Although they have never played against each other before, Marterer expressed excitement for the encounter, stating that he has watched enough of Zverev's matches and looks forward to a great game, hoping to implement his own strategies effectively against him.
