Yannick Hanfmann (32/Karlsruhe) was unable to meet Daniel Altmaier (24/Kempen) for the German duel in the quarterfinals of the Hamburg European Open. Altmaier had an impressive performance on Thursday, surprisingly defeating world number seven Andrey Rublev (25) with a score of 6:2, 6:2.
On the other hand, Hanfmann faced a tough challenge and fell short against the Chinese Zhizhen Zhang (26) with a score of 6:4, 1:6, 4:6. Altmaier expressed his satisfaction with the win over Rublev, but emphasized the importance of consistency in his performance going forward.
With Alexander Zverev already securing his place in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, there are now two German men in the last eight at the Hamburg European Open. Zverev is set to face the 19-year-old Frenchman Luca van Assche, whom he has never played against before.
Top-seeded Casper Ruud (24/Norway) faced some struggles in the first set against Cristian Garin but managed to secure a 1:6, 6:2, 6:2 victory, living up to his role as the favorite. Ruud's quarterfinal opponent will be the 19-year-old Frenchman Arthur Fils, who is currently ranked 71st in the world and is the youngest player in the top 100 of the ATP.
Defending champion Lorenzo Musetti (21/Italy) also advanced to the quarterfinals. He won his match against Slovakian Jozef Kovalik with a score of 3:6, 6:2, 6:4, which was delayed due to darkness the day before. Musetti's next opponent will be Serbian player Laslo Djere.
