In order to advance to the Monte Carlo Masters' round of 16, Casper Ruud defeated Botic van de Zandschulp 7-5, 7-6, extending his winning run to five games.
World No. 4 won the opening set and then In the opening service game, Ruud, who was leading heading into the second, broke Van de Zandschulp on his fourth try.
Ruud was down 4-1 when the Dutchman broke his next two service games, and it appeared like the match would go to a decisive set.

In a recent match between the two players in Miami, Van de Zandschulp prevailed, and Ruud was determined to atone for the defeat. He came back to tie the set at 4-4.
Ruud had to serve to stay in the set with his opponent holding, and in order to make it 5-5, he was compelled to preserve a set point.
Then both players dropped their serves, with Ruud squandering the opportunity to finish the match. A tie-break then ensued, which the world No. 4 won emphatically 7-1 to secure the win.
Ruud said: “Sometimes it’s a little tricky if you play someone that you recently lost to like, ‘Oh no, not again,’ but in this case I was a bit happy because I felt like I had some sort of unfinished business from the Miami match.”
The next round's opponent for Ruud will be Jan-Lennard Struff.
