At the Madrid Open, Eugenie Bouchard notes "a lot of similarities" with Emma Raducanu

Posted : 27 April 2023
With regard to her career and Emma Raducanu's, Eugenie Bouchard claims that she sees plenty of similarities and has compassion for the British No. 1.

When Bouchard, then 20 years old, reached the Wimbledon final in 2014, it seemed as though she was one of the sport's upcoming big names.

Later that year, she rose to No. 5 in the world rankings after making the semifinals of both the Australian Open and the French Open.

However, Bouchard is presently placed at No. 285 and has only triumphed in three main-draw matches on the WTA Tour this year due to a lack of form and physical problems.

Since her unexpected triumph at the 2021 US Open, Raducanu has not dropped as much in the rankings as Bouchard, but she is about to leave the top 100 after pulling out of the Madrid Open.

“I see lots of similarities,” Bouchard said of Radacanu at the Madrid Open.

“I feel for her in that sense. She has a great life, she’s set for life and she’s had great achievements. But I can understand a little bit, possibly the pressure, the scrutiny.

"She tweeted something, posted something about not doing tennis one day and people were like, ‘why don’t you go practise’. I was like, ‘oh, my God, I went through that six, eight years ago’.

“Haters will hate, you know what I mean?”

After missing 17 months of competition due to a shoulder ailment that necessitated surgery, Bouchard, 29, returned to play in August.

She performed well in the Madrid Open qualifying round and defeated Dayana Yastremska in her opening match, but she's not sure if this is the real beginning of her recovery.
