Aryna Sabalenka, Zheng Qinwen Advance in WTA Finals

Posted : 05 November 2024

Aryna Sabalenka has advanced to the semifinals of the WTA Finals after defeating Jasmine Paolini with a score of 6-3, 7-5. With this victory, she secured her place as the winner of the Purple Group, marking her second consecutive win in the round-robin stage held in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, Sabalenka is now on the verge of claiming the year-end No. 1 ranking, positioning herself in direct competition with Iga Swiatek.

In the match against Paolini, Sabalenka faced an early setback, trailing 0-2 in the second set. However, she displayed resilience by saving two set points at 4-5 and ultimately secured the win in straight sets. The Belarusian player has now triumphed in 22 of her last 23 matches on the tour. Reflecting on the match, Sabalenka expressed satisfaction with her performance, emphasizing her commitment to remaining aggressive despite the challenges in the second set.

Earlier on the same day, Zheng Qinwen delivered an impressive performance, defeating world No. 5 Elena Rybakina 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-1. This victory improved Zheng's chances of advancing to the semifinals after an earlier loss to Sabalenka in the round-robin stage. It was a significant win for Zheng, marking her first victory against Rybakina in three encounters, while Rybakina faced her second consecutive defeat, eliminating her from semifinal contention.

Zheng's journey to the WTA Finals has been noteworthy, as she became the first Chinese player to qualify since Li Na in 2013. She showcased her talent by breaking Rybakina's serve early in the match and ultimately secured the first set in a tiebreak. Despite losing the second set, Zheng rebounded in the final frame, taking a commanding lead to clinch the match. The Olympic gold medalist has now achieved a tour-leading 20 three-set victories in 2024, demonstrating her remarkable performance throughout the season.
