Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka expressed her desire to maintain her position at the top of the WTA rankings for a longer duration following her return to the No. 1 spot. The 26-year-old achieved this milestone after surpassing Poland's Iga Swiatek, the reigning French Open champion, due to year-end adjustments in the standings. Having previously held the top position for just eight weeks in September 2023, Sabalenka is eager to extend her stay at No. 1 this time.
In a brief statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sabalenka acknowledged her return to the top with a simple "N1..." and added, "Let's see for how long this time." Her recent success has been remarkable, having lost only one match since mid-August, which includes her triumph at the US Open. As she prepares for her next competition, the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia scheduled for November 2-9, her confidence is evident.
Swiatek, who held the top ranking since late last year and won her third consecutive Roland Garros title in June, has now been dethroned by Sabalenka. The changing of the guard at the top of women's tennis highlights the competitive nature of the sport, with both players vying for supremacy as the season approaches its conclusion.
