Aryna Sabalenka leads stellar lineup at Brisbane International ahead of 2024 Australian Open

The countdown to the 2024 tennis season intensifies as the Australian Open looms just under two months away. Among the preparatory events is the Brisbane International, set to showcase top talents like Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. On the men's side, American player Ben Shelton has been confirmed as part of the field.

 

Sabalenka, ranked world No. 2, is eagerly anticipating her debut in Brisbane, expressing excitement about launching her Australian season in a place that holds special significance after winning her first Grand Slam there. The Brisbane International marks its return to the calendar for the first time since 2020, overcoming disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

The WTA 500 tournament, commencing on December 31, will witness Sabalenka, who enjoyed a triumphant 2023 season in Australia, including a 13-match winning streak and her maiden Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open. Joining her in Brisbane are other top players like world No. 4 Elena Rybakina, along with former world No. 1s Naomi Osaka and Victoria Azarenka.

 

For Osaka, this tournament marks her return after a 16-month hiatus following the birth of her first child. On the men's side, the competition will feature the participation of 21-year-old Ben Shelton, ranked world No. 17, who made waves by reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year.

 

Expressing his enthusiasm, Shelton looks forward to his first appearance at the Brisbane International in 2024, recalling the warmth of Australian fans during his inaugural visit in January. Alongside Shelton, the men's field will include notable players like Andy Murray, Holger Rune, and Grigor Dimitrov.

 

As the stage is set for the Brisbane International, the broader tennis community anticipates an exciting lead-up to the Australian Open, scheduled to begin on Sunday, January 14. The upcoming Grand Slam will witness an extended duration of 15 days for the first time, with Novak Djokovic defending the men's title and Aryna Sabalenka defending the women's title.
