Aryna Sabalenka defeats Sloane Stephens in a courageous comeback to get to French open quarterfinals
Posted : 05 June 2023
Arnya Sabalenka defeated Sloane Stephens 7-6(5), 6-4, and moved on to the French Open quarterfinals.
The first match, which was awarded to the ladies, was the nighttime match on Philippe-Chatrier, and the opening set was well worth the ticket price for the spectators.
Stephens struggled to get into a groove as Sabalenka sprinted to a 5-0 lead, appearing to have everything under control. Sabalenka threatened to humiliate Stephens by breaking his serve twice, but things quickly changed as Stephens produced a love hold to halt the bleeding.
To force a tiebreaker in the opening set, the two alternated service games. Sabalenka won five of the following six points to win the set after Stephens trailed 4-2.
The World No. 2 had been pushed through her paces after 63 minutes of play, but she was still in a good spot.
Stephens was forced to go on the defence as Sabalenka played all of the big shots. In the opening set, Sabalenka committed 25 unforced errors compared to Stephens' 11, clearly demonstrating a significant disparity in strategy.
The opening four games of the second set's second set saw Stephens and Sabalenka trading service games.
The 2023 Australian Open winner did just that after regaining her calm, winning the game to love to win the set and match.
If Salabenka defeats Stephens, she will play Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinal.
