Aryna Sabalenka Advances at China Open Despite Frustrating Start

Posted : 28 September 2024

Aryna Sabalenka embarked on her quest for the China Open title with a commanding 6-4, 6-1 victory over Thai qualifier Mananchaya Sawangkaew on Saturday, despite expressing frustration during the match. As the top seed and world No. 2, Sabalenka is set to face either New Zealand's Lulu Sun or Ashlyn Krueger from the United States in the third round in Beijing.

Having just clinched the US Open title, Sabalenka encountered some challenges against the world No. 187, who was competing in the biggest match of her young career. The 22-year-old Sawangkaew showcased remarkable tenacity and athleticism, refusing to back down even in seemingly hopeless situations. However, her struggles on serve ultimately made it difficult to maintain momentum.

Sabalenka capitalized on her opponent's weaknesses by breaking serve to establish a 4-2 lead in the first set. Despite her greater power, the Belarusian's error-prone performance allowed Sawangkaew to break back, drawing cheers from the Beijing crowd. Though Sabalenka struggled to find her rhythm, she created a set point on Sawangkaew's serve, only to miss a straightforward volley. She managed to convert her second set point, sealing the first set before breaking for a 3-1 lead in the second.

While Sabalenka advanced to the third round, her lack of celebration highlighted her mixed feelings about the performance. In the same tournament, third-seeded Jasmine Paolini fought hard to overcome Denmark's Clara Tauson, winning 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. Notably, world No. 1 and defending champion Iga Swiatek withdrew from the tournament due to personal matters.
