Aruna Quadri, a quarterfinalist at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, is one of the few medal hopefuls for the Nigerian Olympic team come Paris 2024.
He possesses one of the most impressive records at the Olympics by any African athlete, especially in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, when he qualified for the men's single quarterfinal.
En route to the quarterfinal, Aruna, World Number 27, defeated a Slovakian, Wang Yang, 4-1, and in the second round, he famously defeated World Number 5 Chuang Chih-yuan, 4-0, in what many believe was an upset.
In the third round of the Olympics men's singles, Aruna created another upset when he defeated Timo Boll, a German and European champion, by 4-2 for a spot in the quarterfinals of the Olympics.
However, he was faced with the herculean task of playing against the highest-ranked player at the Olympics, a Chinese player, Ma Long, who inadvertently dispatched Aruna by 4-0, which brought to an end Aruna's fairy tale at the Olympics.
However, Aruna created a record in the history of the Olympics in 2016 as the first African to reach the quarterfinal stage of table tennis.
One of the major achievements of Aruna includes a gold medal at the 2017 ITTF African Cup, a title he got when he defeated his archrival, Omar Assar, to clinch his first African title. Aruna got his second ITTF crown again in 2022 in Algiers, Algeria, when he revenged his final loss to Assar in Lagos with a nerve-breaking 4-3 win.
Aruna also reached the 2023 ITTF World Cup Singapore quarterfinal, becoming the first and only African to achieve the feat. With all the past achievements of Aruna, there falls on his shoulders a heavy task to deliver at the Paris 2024 Olympics as one of the medal hopefuls.
Will Aruna step up his game to achieve the feat of becoming the first African on the podium at the Olympics? Time will tell.
