Andy Murray withdraws from Canadian Open due to abdominal strain

Posted : 11 August 2023
Andy Murray expressed his regret to the Canadian Open crowd as he withdrew from the tournament due to an abdominal strain.

The 36-year-old British player had been set to face Italian seventh seed Jannik Sinner in the last 16, following his victory over Max Purcell in the second round.

Speaking to the fans in Toronto, he stated, "I feel like I've disappointed you." Murray continued, "This might also be my last time competing here. So, to end like this feels really disappointing."

The Canadian Open alternates between Toronto and Montreal, and next year's men's event will take place in Montreal.

Murray has only withdrawn from a match seven times in his career. As a result of his withdrawal, Sinner advanced to the quarter-finals and is scheduled to play against French player Gael Monfils on Friday.

Murray provided a statement, explaining that he experienced a "very similar issue" during a tournament in Stuttgart last year before Wimbledon, which caused him to miss the event at Queen's Club.

He added, "It took me about 10 to 12 days before I was feeling good again." While acknowledging that the current strain is not as severe, Murray emphasized the risk of exacerbating the injury by playing.

He mentioned, "So, I'll need to see how it develops over the coming days and hopefully feel better in a few days. I'm really sorry. Thank you."

This injury setback will disrupt Murray's preparations for the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, which begins on August 28 in New York.

In a separate match, world number one Carlos Alcaraz secured a spot in the quarter-finals after a challenging battle with 15th seed Hubert Hurkacz.

Despite leading 5-2 in the deciding set, Alcaraz squandered match points, allowing Poland's Hurkacz a chance to fight back. The Wimbledon champion eventually triumphed with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3) victory.

Alcaraz, who clinched his first Grand Slam title at the 2022 US Open, extended his winning streak to 14 matches. He is now set to face American 12th seed Tommy Paul in the next round.
