Andy Murray wins first singles title since Wimbledon, prepares for US Open

Posted : 03 August 2023
Andy Murray made a triumphant return to singles action at the Citi Open in Washington, recording a straight-sets victory over Brandon Nakashima. It was his first singles appearance since Wimbledon in July, where he lost in the second round to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Murray, a three-time Grand Slam winner, is using the tournament as preparation for the upcoming US Open.

In his match against Nakashima, Murray displayed excellent form and composure, winning with a score of 7-6(5) 6-4. He will now face top seed Taylor Fritz in the second round. Murray expressed his satisfaction with his performance, acknowledging the challenges presented by Nakashima's strong serve. Despite the tight match, Murray managed to secure the win, making smart plays and showing his trademark fighting spirit.

The victory in Washington holds special significance for Murray, as it marks five years since he had an emotional moment in the same event. This time, however, he celebrated a poignant victory, dazzling the crowd with his brilliant backhand shots and powerful serves.

In the next round, Murray faces a tough test against Fritz, who has been in good form on home turf in the United States. Nevertheless, Murray's return to the court and impressive display in Washington signal his readiness for the US Open and the upcoming ATP Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati.

While Murray's fellow Brit Dan Evans also advanced, Liam Broady faced defeat. Wild card Gael Monfils produced a standout performance by upsetting the sixth seed Alexander Bublik. On the other hand, third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime suffered an early exit in the tournament.
