Andy Murray is making a comeback to the Great Britain Davis Cup roster for the group stage finals scheduled in Manchester from September 12 to 17. GB finds itself placed in Group B alongside Australia, France, and Switzerland. Leon Smith's team is aiming for a top-two finish to secure qualification for the knockout stages set to take place in Malaga this November.
Former world No. 1 Andy Murray is set to rejoin the Great Britain Davis Cup squad for the group stage finals held in Manchester from September 12 to 17. The 36-year-old was left out of the GB squad that secured a 3-1 victory over Colombia in February, with Jack Draper being selected in his stead. However, Murray has now been summoned back for the upcoming matches against Australia, France, and Switzerland.
The three-time Grand Slam champion holds cherished memories of the Davis Cup, having played a pivotal role in Britain's triumphant campaign in 2015 that marked the end of a 79-year trophy drought. Murray joins the squad alongside British No. 1 Cameron Norrie, as well as Dan Evans and Wimbledon men's doubles champion Neal Skupski.
Skupski's inclusion adds intrigue, being the sole specialist doubles player in the group. Nevertheless, the initial lineup could still undergo changes. Smith has the flexibility to make alterations to the team up to 24 hours prior to the commencement of the first match.
The team's objective is to secure a top-two position within Group B, a feat that would propel them into the knockout stages scheduled for Malaga in November. Speaking to the LTA website, Smith expressed anticipation for the upcoming matches in Manchester, highlighting the team's eagerness to perform in front of a spirited home crowd. He stated, "It's been a while since we competed in the North West, and I'm confident that we'll feel and harness the energy of the fans. With a highly experienced Davis Cup team, we're prepared to give our all in a challenging group."
