Andy Murray Loses in Straight Sets to Alex De Minaur in the Opening Round of the Monte Carlo Masters
Posted : 18 April 2023
In the opening round of the Monte Carlo Masters, Andy Murray's comeback to clay ended in a quick, straight-sets loss to Alex De Minaur.
Murray was competing in Monaco for the first time since 2017 after missing all but one event of the clay-court season in 2022, which included the French Open.
The 35-year-old struggled mightily on his least preferred surface, dropping the first four games as De Minaur easily defeated him 6-1 6-3, wrapping up the first set in only 35 minutes.
The Briton's hat slipped off during a point, but Carlos Bernardes did not stop play, prompting Murray to argue with him early in the second set.
The pair's discussion on the end-change rule had a detrimental effect on Murray, who lost the following game after making a series of unforced errors.
The 14th-seeded Australian will now play Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round. Murray had 26 unforced mistakes overall compared to De Minaur's eight.
