Andy Murray Fights for Wimbledon Return to Achieve Final Closure Before Retirement

Posted : 01 July 2024

Andy Murray of Britain is striving to regain fitness for Wimbledon, seeking "a bit of closure" at the All England Club before he plans to retire later this year. The 37-year-old, who has won the tournament twice, aims to make a final appearance despite his preparations being hampered by a back issue that required surgery.

Murray, currently ranked 115th in the world, will decide on Monday evening whether he will compete in the singles, with his first-round match against Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic scheduled for Tuesday. Reflecting on his career, Murray, a Wimbledon champion in 2013 and 2016, expressed his desire to play once more on Centre Court and experience the excitement of the crowd.

In the event that he cannot participate in the singles, Murray may still compete in the doubles with his older brother Jamie later in the week. Recently, Murray had a cyst near his spinal cord removed due to nerve pain in his right leg. Although the surgical area is not sore, he has yet to regain full sensation in his leg.

After returning to Wimbledon for practice on Saturday and playing a practice set with fellow Briton Jack Pinnington-Jones on Sunday, Murray remains hopeful about his recovery. "It's getting better every single day," he said, adding that he plans to play another set and undergo physical testing before making a final decision on his participation.
