Wimbledon singles champion Alfie Hewett has been selected for the 2024 ParalympicsGB squad for the Paris Games, aiming for a gold medal in wheelchair tennis. At 26, Hewett, a three-time Paralympics silver medallist, has yet to secure a major singles title, having been a runner-up in men's singles and doubles at Rio 2016 and in doubles at Tokyo 2021.
Joining Hewett in the squad are Gordon Reid, his 21-time Grand Slam-winning doubles partner, Ben Bartram, and Dahnon Ward, who will compete in both singles and doubles. Hewett enters the Games on a high note, having recently clinched his first Wimbledon singles title and the doubles trophy with Reid, marking their sixth win together.
The team also includes Lucy Shuker, who will be competing in her fifth Paralympic Games at the age of 44, and Andy Lapthorne, set to compete in the quad wheelchair events. Shuker, a three-time doubles medallist, expressed her excitement about the Paralympics as a platform showcasing the achievements of athletes with disabilities. The wheelchair tennis events in Paris are scheduled to take place from August 30 to September 7.
