Posted : 22 June 2023
Alexander Zverev demonstrated a dominant performance reminiscent of Roger Federer's swift victories in Halle.
In the Terra Wortmann Open's round of 32, Zverev faced Canadian player Denis Shapovalov and showcased his title ambitions with a strong and remarkably quick win.
Zverev expressed his satisfaction and acknowledged his exceptional play, grinning mischievously.
The match unfolded with early breaks in both sets, setting Zverev, a two-time ATP Finals winner, on the path to victory.
Shapovalov struggled to resist as Zverev displayed confident serving, impressive returns, and an arsenal of effective shots.
Zverev consistently had the right response to whatever Shapovalov attempted, swiftly counterattacking and closing the gaps with ease. When faced with critical moments, Zverev sealed the deal with powerful aces.
After just 75 minutes of play, Zverev converted his third match point to secure a straightforward victory, marking his fifth win in eight encounters against Shapovalov.
Zverev admitted that he usually struggles with returning against the left-handed Canadian but found success this time, particularly against Shapovalov's second serve.
Next, Zverev is set to face Chilean player Nicolas Jarry, who surprised everyone by eliminating Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Jarry also emerged victorious in their recent encounter in Geneva, making Friday's match a more challenging task for Zverev.
Taking advantage of the day off on Thursday, Zverev plans to engage in early training before the forecasted rain and then enjoy a round of golf, even if it drizzles.
