Alexander Zverev contests penalty order over alleged bodily harm, case headed for trial
Posted : 02 November 2023
A German court has imposed a penalty order against Alexander Zverev in response to allegations of causing bodily harm to a woman. Zverev has vehemently contested these allegations and is determined to challenge the penalty order. The court in Berlin issued this order on October 2, along with a fine of 450,000 euros ($475,000), relating to an incident in May 2020 when Zverev is accused of physically harming a woman and jeopardizing her health during an argument in Berlin.
As Zverev disputes the order, the case is likely to progress to a trial at the Tiergarten district court in Berlin, following further hearings involving the concerned parties. In Germany, penalty orders are a method of resolving certain criminal cases without the need for a trial, provided the accused does not contest the order.
Zverev, a 26-year-old tennis star who was a finalist at the 2020 US Open and secured the men's singles Olympic gold medal in 2021, currently holds the ninth position in the rankings. His legal representation, the law firm Schertz Bergmann, released a statement asserting Zverev's rejection of the allegations and highlighting procedural irregularities in the case.
The firm also claimed to possess expert medical evidence supporting Zverev's position. This legal dispute comes after a prior investigation by the men's tennis tour found "insufficient evidence" to substantiate separate claims of domestic abuse against Zverev, commissioned by the ATP in response to allegations made by Zverev's former girlfriend, Olya Sharypova.
