Alex de Minaur's US Open Campaign in Doubt Due to Persistent Hip Injury

Posted : 29 August 2024

World number 10 Alex de Minaur is facing challenges at the US Open due to a persistent hip injury and is uncertain about his fitness for a potential second-round match against Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen. De Minaur, who withdrew from his Wimbledon quarterfinal against Novak Djokovic last month because of a cartilage tear, also missed the Paris Olympics. Despite managing to win his first-round match at Flushing Meadows against Marcus Giron, his ongoing injury could hinder his performance in the upcoming round.

De Minaur has been struggling to adapt his game to protect his injured hip, a situation he finds challenging given his usual playing style of retrieving every ball. The 25-year-old Australian expressed the difficulty of altering his approach, stating that it's tough to adjust mentally and physically when used to being aggressive and responsive on the court.

His injury has also impacted his ATP rankings and his chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin this November, a goal he is eager to achieve for the first time. Missing significant tournaments has cost him valuable ranking points, making his return to full fitness and competitive play crucial for his season ambitions. De Minaur acknowledged the difficulty of his situation but remains focused on managing his condition while keeping his expectations realistic.
