In the second round of the Kinoshita Group Tennis Championships, a match of significance unfolded between Diego Schwartzmann, world number 113, and Alex De Minaur, the 13th ranked player and 4th seed. Their previous encounter had occurred at London Queens Club in July, where De Minaur emerged victorious with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
De Minaur commenced the second round match in dominant fashion, securing an early break. Schwartzmann, though struggling to find his rhythm, displayed a glimmer of hope in the 5th game but couldn't capitalize on a crucial deuce opportunity.
His attempt to approach the net in a last-ditch effort to salvage the set at 0-5 faltered, and De Minaur's return dashed past him. The first set unfolded swiftly, with De Minaur's prowess evident in a 75% 1st serve return point percentage, in contrast to Schwartzmann's 29%. De Minaur claimed the first set with ease, winning 6-0 in a mere 26 minutes, sealed with an ace.
Schwartzmann, undeterred by his challenging start, sought redemption in the second set. He fought hard to seize a 40-15 lead in the opening game, aiming to get on the scoreboard. However, De Minaur, in a deuce/advantage exchange, executed a perfect lob to secure an early break. Schwartzmann persisted and managed to notch his first point, bringing the score to 1-2.
His tenacity paid off when he broke back at 3-3 and saved multiple break points to take the lead for the first time in the match at 4-3. The intense battle continued, but Schwartzmann's miscues on key points allowed De Minaur to clinch the set 7-5, completing a straight-sets victory. Schwartzmann's vulnerabilities on second serve and second serve return were notable, with only 25% and 29% success rates, respectively.
At the post-match press conference, De Minaur expressed his satisfaction with executing his game plan and maintaining his composure under Schwartzmann's relentless pressure. He now looks forward to facing Aslan Karatsev in the next round, hoping to earn valuable points to advance from his 13th place position in the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin in November.
