Carlos Alcaraz achieved a significant milestone at Wimbledon by defeating Matteo Berrettini 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to secure his first-ever quarter-final appearance.
Despite being considered one of the favourites at SW19, the 20-year-old demonstrated his vulnerability on grass during a challenging four-set battle against Nicolas Jarry in the previous round.
In contrast, the resurgent Berrettini had showcased his talent with a straight-sets victory over Alexander Zverev and aimed for a major upset.
The highly anticipated match unfolded with closely contested service games, captivating the packed crowd and press box. Both players showcased a combination of power and delicate touches, resulting in a deadlock for a significant portion of the first set, as neither could force a breakthrough.
However, the 27-year-old Italian capitalized on a moment of indecisiveness from the world No. 1, securing a crucial break for a 5-3 lead and ultimately serving out the set.
Alcaraz, feeling the pressure, had an early break point opportunity in the second set, but Berrettini managed to hold his serve, causing visible frustration for the Spaniard.
However, Alcaraz's persistence paid off as Berrettini committed two unforced errors, providing the young player with a 0-40 advantage at 2-1. Alcaraz capitalized on the opportunity, securing the break and consolidating it to establish a 4-1 lead. Utilizing his powerful and accurate serves, Alcaraz confidently leveled the match.
In the third set, Alcaraz's superior movement allowed him to capitalize on Berrettini's vulnerabilities, breaking his serve to take a 2-1 lead. With a 5-3 advantage, Alcaraz put pressure on the Italian, who had to serve to stay in the set.
Displaying exceptional skill, Alcaraz gained multiple break points, eventually converting the third to move within one set of victory. Berrettini requested the closure of the roof, and the umpire granted his request after he held his service game to love, making it 2-2 in the fourth set.
Despite Berrettini's hopes for a reversal of fortunes, Alcaraz swiftly regained his dominance. A powerful right-handed shot set him up to serve for the match, and he maintained composure to secure the victory without hesitation. Alcaraz's triumph earned him a spot in the quarter-finals, where he will face Danish sixth seed Holger Rune.
