Alcaraz Says Pressure to Reach No. 1 During Sinner's Ban Affected His Performance

Posted : 07 April 2025

Carlos Alcaraz, currently ranked third in the world, has admitted that the pressure to overtake Jannik Sinner during the Italian’s absence had a negative impact on his game. Sinner, who is serving a doping suspension until May 4, left a temporary vacancy at the top of the rankings.

Many saw this as an opportunity for Alcaraz to reclaim the No. 1 spot, but the Spaniard confessed that the external expectations overwhelmed him. Speaking from Monte Carlo, where he is beginning his clay court season, Alcaraz acknowledged that the burden affected his performance.

Although he captured his first title of 2025 in Rotterdam, Alcaraz has since struggled to build momentum. He was eliminated in the quarterfinals in Doha, reached the semifinals at Indian Wells, and then suffered an early exit in Miami.

These results have left him trailing by more than 3,500 points behind Sinner, with Alexander Zverev also ahead of him in second place. Despite these setbacks, Alcaraz is looking to reset mentally ahead of his Roland Garros title defense and will begin his Monte Carlo campaign against either Fabio Fognini or Francisco Cerundolo.

The 21-year-old is shifting focus from rankings to performance, making it clear that he no longer sees reaching No. 1 during the clay season as a realistic goal. He emphasized the importance of playing freely, without being burdened by thoughts of standings. "I'm too far from Jannik right now," Alcaraz said, adding that his current mindset is to concentrate on enjoying his matches rather than chasing the top spot.
