Carlos Alcaraz faced a tough test against local wildcard Botic van de Zandschulp in his first match since his quarterfinal loss at the Australian Open, eventually securing a 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-1 victory at the Rotterdam Open. The top seed had to fight through some challenging moments in the nearly three-hour encounter, especially as he struggled early on with uncharacteristic errors and a slow indoor surface.
Van de Zandschulp, who had stunned Alcaraz with a straight-sets win at last year’s US Open, managed to put the pressure on early, forcing Alcaraz into mistakes and even earning a set point at 5-4 in the first set. However, a double fault from Van de Zandschulp allowed Alcaraz to level the score and eventually take the first set in a tie-break, where he displayed his best form, winning 7-3.
The second set proved to be equally competitive, with Van de Zandschulp capitalizing on Alcaraz’s mistakes to break serve and take a 4-2 lead.
Serving for the set at 5-3, the Dutchman leveled the match after Alcaraz’s forehand went wide, much to the delight of the home crowd. Alcaraz acknowledged his struggles, stating it was an "up and down" performance, but expressed confidence in improving his weaknesses for the next round.
In the decisive third set, Alcaraz regained control, breaking Van de Zandschulp early and building a 3-0 lead. The break seemed to deflate the local favorite, and Alcaraz comfortably served out the match at 5-1 before sealing victory with a delicate forehand drop shot volley.
As the Spaniard seeks to become the first from his country to win in Rotterdam, he faces tough competition, including second seed Daniil Medvedev, who also advanced with a win over Stan Wawrinka.
