Alcaraz extends Madrid Open streak; Sinner, Medvedev advance to quarterfinals

Posted : 01 May 2024

Second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz continued his dominant run at the Madrid Open, matching a record-equalling 14-match winning streak with a hard-fought victory over familiar opponent Jan-Lennard Struff, securing a spot in the quarterfinals. The rematch of last year's final saw Alcaraz prevailing over Struff in a tense encounter, setting up a quarterfinal clash with seventh seed Andrey Rublev. Despite facing challenges, including squandering match points and a resilient Struff, Alcaraz expressed his joy and determination to advance further in the tournament.

Top-seeded Jannik Sinner overcame a hip problem to secure a comeback victory against Karen Khachanov, advancing to his fourth Masters 1000 quarterfinal in as many events this season. Alcaraz, maintaining an impressive 24-0 record on Spanish clay since the beginning of the 2022 season, aims to make history by becoming the first player to claim three consecutive Madrid titles. Despite setbacks, including relinquishing leads and battling his emotions, Alcaraz remained resilient, eventually sealing victory in a grueling match reminiscent of last year's final.

Elsewhere, third seed Daniil Medvedev completed his Masters 1000 quarterfinal set by defeating Alexander Bublik, setting up a potential showdown with Rafael Nadal or Jiri Lehecka. Medvedev showcased his dominance, cruising to victory after a closely contested tiebreak in the first set, securing his place in the last-eight stage or better in all nine Masters 1000 events. Despite physical challenges, players like Sinner and Medvedev remain focused on advancing further in the tournament, setting the stage for thrilling matchups in the quarterfinals.
