After having surgery for the hip issue that has kept him out of play since January, Rafael Nadal will be out for a further five months.
The 37-year-old 22-time Grand Slam winner underwent an arthroscopic operation on Friday.
According to his staff, everything went smoothly, the damaged portions were cleansed and fortified, and a previous injury was also repaired.
At the conclusion of the 2024 season, the Spaniard has stated his intention to retire.
"Rafael will begin his progressive functional rehabilitation in a few hours and the normal recovery process is estimated at five months," Nadal's representative Benito Perez-Barbadillo said.
The former world number one wrote on Twitter: "Thank you for all the support you have shown me and that you show me every day.
"Today is also my birthday. Not in the desired or dreamed place, but still, thank you."
Although Nadal had been practising recently and would be absent from the French Open for the first time in 19 years, he was unable to compete at Roland Garros, where he has a record 14 titles.
When revealing his retirement intentions last month, Nadal stated that he would strive to prepare physically as best he could for his farewell season the following year, when he wants to bid farewell to the competitions that have held the most significance for him.
