56th Molade Okoya-Thomas Championship ends on high in Lagos as Kuti claims gold

Mathew Kuti defeated Abdufatai Abdulbasit on Saturday to claim the gold medal in the men’s singles final of the 56th Molade Okoya-Thomas Championship in Lagos.


The tournament final took place at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.


Kuti triumphed over Kwara’s Abdulbasit in an exciting 4-1 match (7-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-5, 11-9) to secure the title.


Kuti expressed his joy and gratitude, saying, “This is an incredible feeling. I’m overwhelmed with joy and gratitude.”


He also thanked God, his family, and his coaches for their support.


“To my family, who have been my rock throughout my career, I love you all so much. Your unwavering support means the world to me,” he said.


His coach, Ganiyu Kadiri, also praised Kuti’s hard work and dedication.


“I’m so proud of my player. His hard work, dedication, and perseverance have paid off. This gold medal is not just Kuti’s achievement but a reflection of our team’s spirit and resilience,” he said.


Additionally, Tosin Bakare, the daughter of the late Molade Okoya-Thomas, congratulated the winners and urged young athletes to pursue their dreams and passion for table tennis.


She said, “I’m honored to stand before you as we bring this fantastic tournament to a close. Your dedication, perseverance, and passion for table tennis are truly inspiring.”


She also reflected on her father’s legacy, stating, “My father’s love for sports and his commitment to youth development through athletics continue to inspire us today.”
