2025 Rainoil Tennis Open: Players set up for big clash in Q/final fixtures

Posted : 08 February 2025

The players at the ongoing 2025 Rainoil Tennis Championships are now set for epic battles in the quarterfinals after top-ranked players suffered an early exit from the tournament.

The quarterfinals commenced on Feb. 7 at the Ikoyi Club Tennis Section, Lagos, with a potentially explosive lineup.

Tournament number one seed, Christopher Bulus, fresh from representing Nigeria in the Davis Cup Playoffs against South Africa in Pretoria, cruised past Endurance Ehigiamusoe 6-2, 6-1 to reach the quarters.

Bulus’ national teammate, Canice Abua, routed Lucky Danjuma 6-2, 6-4 to progress, while another Davis Cup player, Michael Emmanuel, bested Yusuf Abubakar 6-2, 6-2.

Elsewhere, Abayomi Philip caused the biggest upset yesterday in the fourth round, battling from a set down to beat former Nigerian champion and tournament number two seed, Uche Oparaoji, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Philip, who trains at the Mainland Tennis Club in Lagos, will face fellow Mainlander, Matthew Abamu, in their quarterfinal match today.

In the Women’s Singles event, Etoro Bassey of the GEUF Tennis Academy in Akwa Ibom will face Abuja-based Success Ogunjobi in the quarters.

Bassey forced top seed Omolayo Bamidele to retire after taking the first set 6-3 and leading 4-0 in the second set.

Success got the better of veteran Stella Udokwelu in two entertaining sets, winning 6-4, 6-2 to progress.

Top seed and Nigeria’s number one female tennis player, Khadijat Mohammed, will face in-form Patience Onebamhoin in one of the women’s quarterfinal ties.

Mohammed dispatched Destiny Okhinaye 6-0, 7-6(1) to book her spot in the last eight, while Patience impressed in her second-round match against Khadijat Salami, winning 6-2, 6-2 to continue her strong run in the competition.

The Rainoil National Tennis Open, which began on Monday, February 3, will conclude on Sunday, February 9, 2025.
