Yurav Premlal shot an impressive opening round of 66 to take a one-stroke lead in the Betway Big Easy Tour tournament at Modderfontein Golf Club on Tuesday. Premlal, a member of the Papwa Sewgolum Class, delivered a near-perfect six-under-par round, placing him at the top of the leaderboard early in this 54-hole event.
Reflecting on his performance, Premlal said, "It was very consistent the whole day. I hit a lot of greens and gave myself many chances. I started with birdies on one and two, hit two good iron shots, made an up-and-down on one, and sank a five-footer on two. I hit a good wedge shot on seven and made birdie there." He made four birdies and a single bogey on the front nine, maintaining his composure to finish the round bogey-free on the back nine.
Premlal’s consistency was evident as he navigated the course with precision. Despite a minor setback on the ninth hole where he missed the left bunker and failed to up-and-down, he played solidly on the back nine, hitting almost every green and giving himself numerous birdie opportunities. His steady play kept him ahead of the competition as the tournament progressed.
Keenan Davidse, another member of the Papwa Sewgolum Class, delivered a solid 67 to tie for second place with Francois Van der Walt and Eric Wowor. Davidse, returning to the game after a personal hiatus due to family losses, showcased his resilience and skill against a challenging field. "I’ve gone through a lot in the past few months and took a short break. I’m just glad to be back playing again," said Davidse. Despite feeling his game was still a bit rusty, he was pleased with his performance and looked forward to the upcoming rounds.
Van der Walt, pleased with his own opening round, aims to maintain his form over the next 36 holes. Meanwhile, Thanda Mavundla, Makhetha Mazibuko, and Jacquin Hess, also members of the Papwa Sewgolum Class initiative, carded 69s to share fifth place at three-under. Andre De Decker, amateur Christiaan Heyman, Kyke Wykes, and Vaugh van Deventer are tied for eighth at two-under-par with two rounds remaining.
