The seventh day of the 2023 World Junior Championships in Guadalajara witnessed notable achievements, including a home champion for Mexico, a historic first win for Iran, and the emergence of another debutant medallist for Japan.
All six medallists were teenagers, highlighting the youth-driven talent at the forefront of weightlifting. The day's events brought the total number of nations on the medals table to 22, showcasing the global diversity of talent participating in the competition.
In a momentous victory, 18-year-old Mairyn Hernandez claimed gold for Mexico in the women's 81kg category. Hernandez's decisive final attempt at 126kg secured her victory, with the Weightlifting Forum resonating with cheers and the Mexican anthem playing in celebration.
This marked Mexico's third triumph, bringing them level with the United States, who lead the medals table with more silvers and bronzes. Hernandez's achievement was particularly remarkable, considering her history of losing leads in clean and jerk after winning snatch gold at the World Youth Championships.
Asian youth and junior champion Anamjan Rustamova from Turkmenistan secured victory in snatch and claimed second place on total, while Ahmed from Egypt took the third spot. Alireza Nasiri, an 18-year-old Iranian, demonstrated exceptional performance by winning at 96kg, reversing the results from the Asian Junior Championships in August.
Nasiri, who made 166-205-371, attributed his success to good rest, quality food, and rigorous training. Japanese debutant Masashi Nishikawa finished third, contributing to Japan's impressive tally of 18 total medals.
The Japanese team in Guadalajara showcased remarkable success, with eight participants making their international debut and five winning medals. Notably, Mahmoud Hosny, an 18-year-old Egyptian, faced unexpected challenges, failing at 198kg, 204kg, and 206kg, despite his prior achievements, including a senior World Championships bronze. The day's events underscored the dynamic and competitive nature of the 2023 World Junior Championships, with emerging talents and unexpected outcomes shaping the competition's narrative.
