American golfer Xander Schauffele secured his second major championship by winning the British Open on Sunday, just two months after his first major victory. The 30-year-old Californian played a flawless final round of 65 at Royal Troon on Scotland's west coast, emerging from a crowded leaderboard to claim the Claret Jug.
Schauffele, who won the PGA Championship in May, finished the tournament at nine-under-par, two shots ahead of England's Justin Rose and fellow American Billy Horschel. Reflecting on his achievement, Schauffele remarked, "Hearing your name called with 'Open champion' after it is something I've dreamed of for a very long time."
Starting the final round tied for second with five other players, Schauffele was a shot behind the overnight leader, Horschel. He played a solid front nine, reaching two-under for the day with birdies at the sixth and seventh holes. Schauffele's game elevated on the back nine as his closest competitors, including Rose, Horschel, and South Africa's Thriston Lawrence, began to falter.
A brilliant approach to the 11th hole set up a tap-in birdie, followed by a 16-foot birdie putt on the 13th, putting Schauffele at seven-under. As Lawrence dropped his first shot on the 12th, Schauffele took the lead. Further birdies on the 14th and 16th extended his lead to three shots, and two closing pars secured his victory, making him the first golfer to win two majors in a single season since Brooks Koepka in 2018.
Among other notable performances, Rose shared the lead briefly but ended tied for second after bogeying the 12th hole and birdying the 16th and 18th. Horschel finished strong with birdies on the last three holes, also tying for second. Lawrence ended in fourth place, while American Russell Henley took fifth. Shane Lowry, the leader after two rounds, finished in sixth. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm tied for seventh with South Korea's Im Sung-jae. Several top players, including Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and Bryson DeChambeau, struggled with the challenging conditions and missed the cut.
