Xander Basson delivered a remarkable second-round performance of six-under-par 66, bringing his total to 15-under ahead of the final round at the eighth Betway Big Easy Tour event at Waterkloof Golf Club. The second round of the 54-hole tournament was interrupted by bad weather on Wednesday, forcing Basson and the majority of the field to complete their rounds on Friday morning. Despite a slower start on his front nine, where he carded a 37, Basson’s back nine was nothing short of spectacular, as he finished with a flawless 29, showcasing his skill, patience, and determination.
Reflecting on his round, Basson admitted that his front nine wasn’t up to his usual standard. "I was hitting it well but left myself in some bad spots," he said. However, his mindset changed after a strong start to the back nine. He told his caddie that he felt confident and focused on making birdies. That approach paid off, as Basson went on a birdie streak, turning what had been a shaky start into a successful finish.
The weather delay did little to affect Basson’s momentum. "I was actually excited to go back out yesterday," he commented. When he resumed his round, Basson was feeling good about his game, particularly his putting. He continued to play aggressively and ended his round with a near eagle-putt on the 18th, adding an exclamation mark to his impressive performance.
Paul Boshoff, last week’s winner, also made a strong move, carding a 67 to close the gap, and is now just two shots behind Basson. Boshoff’s recent form has him feeling confident about his chances for another win. Leon Visser follows in solo third at 11-under, while Graham van der Merwe and Eric Wowor share fourth at nine-under.
