Wu Yize secured a 5-4 victory over world number 16 Chris Wakelin at the BetVictor Scottish Open in Edinburgh, earning a spot in his fourth ranking event semi-final. The 21-year-old Chinese player is now just two wins away from claiming his first ranking title.
This achievement comes after a successful 2022 season, which saw him named Rookie of the Year and demonstrate continued potential, including a run to the BetVictor English Open final earlier this season.
Wu's next challenge will be a semi-final match against compatriot Xiao Guodong, with the winner progressing to the final and a chance to lift the Stephen Hendry Trophy. A victory in this event would also move Wu above Neil Robertson in the BetVictor Series standings, positioning him to claim a £150,000 bonus.
Wakelin, despite a strong performance, will have to settle for another near-miss, though his continued rise in the rankings has earned him a debut at the Johnstone’s Paint Masters in January.
The match itself saw Wakelin take an early lead with breaks of 107 and 51, but Wu fought back to level the score at 2-2 with runs of 82 and 72.
Wakelin regained the advantage, but Wu won two consecutive frames to move ahead 4-3. After Wakelin made a gutsy contribution of 103 to force a decider, he missed a crucial red, allowing Wu to seal the win with a decisive 66.
In the other half of the draw, Xiao Guodong defeated 2023 World Champion Luca Brecel 5-1, securing his place in the semi-finals.
Xiao's impressive performance, which included breaks of 106 and 81, capped off a strong season in which he claimed his first ranking title at the Wuhan Open and reached the final of the Champion of Champions.
Brecel's loss ends a crucial run that had helped him stabilize his position in the top 64, but he will now have to focus on maintaining his ranking as his 2023 Crucible points start to drop off.
