Wout Van Aert Signs Lifetime Contract Extension with Jumbo-Lease a Bike

Posted : 19 September 2024

Wout Van Aert, a former Tour de France stage winner, has signed a contract extension with Jumbo-Lease a Bike that will last until his retirement, the team announced on Wednesday. Since joining the Dutch outfit in 2019, the 30-year-old Belgian has played a pivotal role in multiple victories, including helping teammate Jonas Vingegaard secure the 2023 Tour de France title. Van Aert has also achieved success in one-day races and three cyclo-cross world championships. Despite being linked to a potential move to Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe, one of his personal sponsors, Van Aert opted to remain with Jumbo-Lease a Bike.

In a statement released by the team, Van Aert expressed his satisfaction with the decision, stating, "This team is unique and has suited me for five years, and I want to keep it that way." Although he did not specify an exact date for his retirement, Van Aert emphasized that staying with the team "forever" felt like the right choice. His commitment comes after a fruitful five-year relationship with the team, during which he has secured numerous victories across different cycling disciplines.

Jumbo sporting director Richard Plugge praised Van Aert for his versatility, describing him as an all-rounder who excels as a sprinter, time trialist, classic rider, and even mountain stage winner. Plugge highlighted Van Aert's famous victory on Mont Ventoux in the Tour de France as an example of his remarkable capabilities. He emphasized that Van Aert has become an integral part of the team's success and will continue to be a key player in their future endeavors.

Unfortunately, Van Aert will miss the upcoming road world championship in Zurich due to injuries sustained during this year's Vuelta a España. Despite winning three stages in the Vuelta, his injury forced him to withdraw from the race, marking a temporary setback in an otherwise stellar season.
